Whether you would like me to start capturing your little one only days new, or if you would like to start a little later, the choice is yours. Please read through these helpful FAQs for more information on how to prepare for each of your little one's milestone portrait sessions.

WHEN SHOULD MY NEWBORN BE PHOTOGRAPHED?

The best time to photograph your newborn is between 4 to 14 days new.  We like to schedule this particular session during these first days for many reasons.  Newborns this young are more likely to "curl up" and remain sleepy for the duration of the session.  They are much more tolerant of being posed and moved around than a 3 to 4 week old.  Almost all of the "sleepy newborn" portraits that you see in our newborn portfolio are captured within the first 14 days.

WHAT IF MY NEWBORN IS OLDER THAN 14 DAYS?

If your newborn is older than 14 days, don't worry, I can still capture beautiful portraits of your little one.  After two weeks, babies tend to be less sleepy and flexible, and like to stretch out more rather than curl up.  This makes it more difficult to achieve those sleepy, cuddly poses that parents love.  The session may require a little more effort and I'll do everything in my power to achieve your desired poses, but know that I might not be able to capture all of those curly, sleepy poses you may be looking for.

WHAT IF MY BABY DECIDES TO ARRIVE A LITTLE EARLY OR LATE?

Having two children of my own, I know firsthand how a delivery date can change unexpectedly.  When you schedule your newborn session with my studio, the appointment will be listed as "tentative" in my calendar.  Once your baby is born, please contact me at your earliest convenience, ideally within the first couple of days, and I'll schedule your "final" newborn session appointment.  This is such a special time for you and your family--the last thing I want is for you to worry about rescheduling your newborn session if your little one decides to surprise you with an early or late arrival! I keep my photography schedule flexible so you can be assured that, if you need to reschedule your newborn session, doing so will be quick and easy.

HOW LONG DOES A NEWBORN SESSION LAST?

Newborn sessions usually take the longest amount of time of all the first year milestone sessions.  Because of the frequent nurturing and feeding of the newborn, expect this session to last a minimum of 2+ hours.  We are on your newborn's schedule and never want to rush such an important session, so let your little one take as many breaks as needed.

CAN I INCLUDE ANY SPECIAL HEIRLOOMS OR PROPS DURING THE SESSION?

Yes!  I always encourage you to bring something special to be incorporated during such a special session, whether it's something that was handmade for your little one, something that might represent your favorite sports team, or something that pays tribute to a member of our armed services or law enforcement professional in your family.  I'll do my best to incorporate anything you bring to the session. I also encourage you to bring any special outfits or clothing items that you would like your newborn to be photographed in.  I always make sure to capture these portraits first, and if we have time, you're welcome to look through my stash of cute props and outfits to use as well.  To make sure that I'm properly prepared to incorporate your special prop(s) in the session, I do ask that you contact me beforehand and let me know what items you are bringing with you.

CAN I REQUEST CERTAIN POSES?

Yes!  I suggest creating and sharing a Pinterest board with me before the session.  I'll make every attempt to capture your little one in the same or similar pose(s). However, there are certain poses that I might deem unsafe and be unwilling to photograph due to the well-being of your newborn.  Your baby's safety is always my number one priority no matter how old they are.

WHERE DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH NEWBORN SESSIONS?

All newborn sessions are photographed at my home studio.  My home studio is equipped with lots of beautiful backdrops, blankets, baskets and props for your little ones to use during their photography session.  I use continuous lights during the session, so there will be no harsh strobes flashing at your little one's eyes. Currently, I do not offer location newborn sessions unless there is a medical reason hindering your newborn from visiting my home studio.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN MY NEWBORN SESSION?

My studio is a major advocate of updating family portraits as often as possible.  I'm happy to photograph your newborn with any siblings and/or with your growing family.  Since the newborn's session may take 2+ hours, I recommend photographing these portraits first and arranging someone to leave with the sibling(s) once I've photographed them.  All of the regular sessions include up to 6 people, so if you would like to include more than 6 people there will be an additional fee of $15.00 per person.  If you plan on including others with your newborn's session, please notify me so I am properly prepared.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT I SHOULD BRING OR KNOW BEFORE THE SESSION?

My home studio, where we'll be photographing the newborn session, is kept at a very warm temperature to keep your little one comfortable during those nude or almost nude poses.  I recommend that anyone who is staying during the newborn session wear light, breathable clothing.  I have photographed newborns for many years and it seems that every time we are about to begin the session these little ones need a quick diaper change or feeding.  Please make sure to bring enough food and diapers to last at least 2+ hours, along with a diaper cloth for those cute milky dribbles.  If your newborn has already taken to a pacifier please remember to bring this as well, our lives may depend on it!  If your little one has any baby acne and/or scratches on their face, fear not, I'm a wiz with advanced lighting techniques and mad Photoshop skills.

As always, I'm happy to answer all of your questions so please don't hesitate to contact my studio if you have any before your little one's first session.

WHEN SHOULD MY 3 MONTH OLD BE PHOTOGRAPHED?

I like to photograph the 3 month sessions when your baby is able to hold their head up on their own, when laying on their belly.  Some babies reach this stage right at 3 months, and others a bit closer to 4 months.  Often a 3 month old has a limited tolerance for being on their belly, so I usually photograph these tummy portraits first while working quickly and efficiently. Most of your baby's portraits will be photographed with them on their back, or sitting up in a cute basket or prop. Your baby's safety is always my number one priority no matter how old they are.

WHEN SHOULD MY 6 MONTH OLD BE PHOTOGRAPHED?

At 6 months old, your baby is often full of smiles, giggles and lots of personality.  To get the best results, your baby should also be sitting up without your assistance.  It's best that your baby is over the wobbly stage, so they don't risk toppling over during the session. Some babies reach this stage right at 6 months, and others a bit closer to 7 months. Your baby's safety is always my number one priority no matter how old they are.

WHEN SHOULD MY 9 MONTH OLD BE PHOTOGRAPHED?

Your 9 month old will not only share their cute smiles and giggles with my camera, but they'll be on the move and will probably be crawling around at lighting speed!  I've even experienced babies at this stage pulling themselves up on stationary objects with their new found strength.  Be prepared to chase your little one around during this session and frequently bring them back to the backdrop and/or floor drop or location scene. Your baby's safety is always my number one priority no matter how old they are.

WHEN SHOULD MY 1 YEAR OLD BE PHOTOGRAPHED?

Around 12 months, your baby may be standing completely on their own or by holding onto a stationary object.  They will have lots of cute faces to capture, along with a budding personality, and they'll be moving with much more ease and at an even faster pace.  Be prepared to chase your little one around during this session and frequently bring them back to the backdrop and/or floor drop or location scene.  Your baby's safety is always my number one priority no matter how old they are.

HOW LONG DOES A 3, 6, 9 MONTH & 1 YEAR SESSION LAST?

Each of these sessions usually takes about one hour to photograph, but don't worry if we need to take a little longer. During the session we are on your baby's schedule and I never want to rush such an important milestone session, so let your little one take as many breaks as needed for snacks, drinks and cuddles.

WHERE DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH THE 3, 6, 9 MONTH & 1 YEAR SESSIONS?

All 3, 6 or 9 month sessions can be photographed at my home studio or at a location of your choice.  My home studio is equipped with lots of beautiful backdrops, blankets, baskets and props for your baby to use during their photography session.  I use continuous lights with all Baby Milestone Sessions, so there will be no harsh strobes flashing at your baby's eyes.  If you would prefer to have your baby's session photographed at a location, then please share those details with me so I may be properly prepared.

HOW MANY CHANGES OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING FOR MY BABY?

I can usually photograph your baby in 3 to 4 outfits during the 3, 6 and 9 month & 1 year sessions.  I always photograph the outfits that you supply first and if we have time you are welcome to look through my stash of cute props and outfits to use as well.  What I've found to work best is to arrive with your baby wearing your favorite outfit. Once I've photographed your baby in this first outfit you can then change your baby in your next favorite outfit and so on.  Also, it might be a good idea to bring a spare outfit or two, just in case your little one decides to make a mess!

I always make sure to capture these portraits first, and if we have time, you're welcome to look through our stash of cute props and outfits to use as well.  To make sure that I am properly prepared to incorporate your special prop(s) in the session, I do ask that you contact me beforehand and let me know what items you are bringing with you.

Adding a Cake Smash to your baby's 1 year session is a great way to celebrate such an important milestone while capturing many cute portraits of your little one experiencing such a delight.  I have many cake smash portraits and themes on display for you to view in our baby portfolio on my website.

HOW DO I ADD A CAKE SMASH TO MY BABY'S 1 YEAR SESSION?

Simple--just contact my studio and notify me that you would like to schedule a Cake Smash Session or add a cake smash to your Baby Milestone Package!  All I need to know is what type of theme and colors you would like me and custom cake decorator to use and we'll take care of the rest.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ADD A CAKE SMASH?

  • ADDING A CAKE SMASH TO YOUR BABY MILESTONE PACKAGE:  I require a non-refundable $50.00 fee to be placed at the time of booking your Baby's Cake Smash Session.  This fee is a separate charge and will not be applied towards your Baby Milestone Package total.  Remember that Baby Milestone Package "Adored" already includes a complimentary Cake Smash Session.
  • BOOKING A CAKE SMASH SESSION WITHOUT A BABY MILESTONE PACKAGE:  Please view our Cake Smash Session Fee HERE for more details.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN MY CAKE SMASH FEE?

Included in your cake smash investment is a one-of-a-kind custom designed smash cake by Cakes by Angie.  With over 20 years of experience Cakes by Angie designs the cutest smash cakes per your requested theme and color(s).  Also included in your cake smash investment is all of the decorations and balloons that my studio will use to make your baby's 1 year session even more exciting.

WHEN WILL THE CAKE SMASH BE PHOTOGRAPHED DURING MY BABY'S 1 YEAR SESSION?

I have photographed many cake smashes during a baby's 1 year session and have found that photographing the cake smash last works out the best, both for the baby and the parents.

WHERE WILL THE CAKE SMASH BE PHOTOGRAPHED?

Most parents prefer to have their baby's cake smash photographed at me home studio, where we have a bathroom to help with cleaning up, but if you'd like me to photograph the cake smash at a location, I can definitely accommodate your request.  Just please be sure to notify me so I can properly prepare.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PHOTOGRAPH THE CAKE SMASH?

The cake smash portion of your baby's 1 year session usually only lasts about 20 minutes.  During the cake smash I work as efficiently as possible to produce a maximum number of portraits during this time.  I'll capture your baby's first bite and all of their cute faces and gestures during their experience with their smash cake.

HOW MESSY WILL MY BABY BE AFTER THE CAKE SMASH?

I've seen many babies react very differently when presented with their own smash cakes, so it's always hard to tell how messy they will be after their cake smash.  If your baby has had cake, or something as sweet, before the session they usually will dive right into the cake and make a larger mess.  If you baby has never eaten cake or very sweet foods before the session, than they may only pick at the cake and taste it in small samples.
