WHY MY STUDIO CHARGES A SESSION FEE

I strive to give all my clients the best experience possible, and your session fee is a small investment into a collection of cherished memories that I can't wait to capture for you.  With your session fee, you are not only supporting my small local business, but you are helping my studio stay at the top of its game and keep up to date with the latest and greatest in photographic techniques, education, unique props, and backdrop.  This will allow your new portraits to stand out from everyone else's. Thank You for your business!

INCLUDED WITH EVERY EXTENDED FAMILY SESSION

PRE-SESSION CONSULTATION:  After you have contacted my studio, I would like to schedule a consultation with you.  This consultation usually only takes about 20-30 minutes and helps in planning your photography session.  During your consultation, we will discuss your session details and I'll answer any questions you may have.  Then, if we haven’t done so already, we’ll officially schedule your session. This consultation can take place at my home studio, or I can email a consultation form to you so you can fill it out and submit it back to me at your convenience.

IN-PERSON ORDERING APPOINTMENT:  I encourage you to schedule an appointment with me to place your order in person. During your ordering appointment, I can answer all of your questions and make sure that you have taken advantage of any promotions that apply.  If your busy schedule doesn't allow you the time to schedule an ordering appointment, no worries--every online gallery includes a shopping cart feature that you can use to place any additional orders.

PRIVATE PASSWORD PROTECTED ONLINE GALLERY:  Your new images will be uploaded into a password protected online gallery after each session.  Your online gallery will be available for one month, allowing you plenty of time to choose your session prints and complete any additional orders.

GALLERY LIFETIME GUARANTEE:  Allowing me to document your special memories is not only an honor and privilege but something that I don't take lightly.  Even though you don't want to think about it, all sorts of events can cause you to lose your print or digital images.  Aside from accidentally erasing your digital images, what if your computer crashes, your house floods, or the disc that you used to back up your digital images won't load?  This is why I offer a Lifetime Guarantee with each session.  What does this mean?  As a complimentary service, I will never purge your gallery images and they will be archived for a lifetime.  Yes, you read that correctly, a LIFETIME!  I want you to be reassured that all of your gallery images will be safe and sound no matter what accident may come your way.  I know firsthand how special your memories are and how much life can change from one year to the next.  So, rest easy knowing that your memories will be there for you, always.

I LOVE photographing multigenerational and extended families! Vacations, reunions, holidays, and anniversary celebrations are special times and provide the perfect opportunity to be remembered with quality professional portraiture. However, in my many years of experience photographing large groups, I have learned that there are a few things to keep in mind when you are considering booking this type of session. There are a few common pitfalls that can easily be avoided with a little thoughtful preparation.

FIRST ~ GOAL OF THE SESSION

Make sure that everyone is in agreement about the goal of the session.  Some families want to take the rare opportunity of everyone being together and use it to capture relationship images between family members – siblings, grandparents with all of the grandkids, etc.  This takes longer, but it allows the creation of many treasured heirloom portraits that will last for generations.  This is my most popular extended family session by far. After all, the opportunity to all be together for a session is rare, and the hardest part of getting everyone together and dressed is done – so taking full advantage of it makes sense.  Depending on how large your family is, this full extended family session usually takes about 1 to 2 hours to photograph.

Some families only want a great photo of the whole group, documenting that everyone was there and providing a well lit and controlled image that would look nice as a keepsake or perhaps an enlargement for the grandparents.  They understandably don’t want to take much time out of an already tight schedule.  I offer a special mini-session for this type of extended family session, which takes about 20-30 minutes to photograph.

SECOND ~ CHOOSE YOUR CONTACT

Please choose ONE person to be the contact that I will communicate with before and after the session.  This family contact will collect the payment from each family group and will be the person to make sure that each family group has signed my studio's model and waiver of liability release forms. It is too easy to make mistakes or omissions if there are too many people involved, and I want to provide you with the best, most stress-free experience that I can!

THIRD ~ TYPE OF SESSION

Make sure that everyone is in agreement about the type or style of the extended family photo session. Some people love traditional, perfectly lit and posed studio photography and some people prefer casual, outdoor portraits that are a little more relaxed. It’s important to know if someone will be unhappy if their hair is blowing a little, or if they will be uncomfortable sitting on the ground. Often an extended family session is a gift for grandparents, who tend to like a more classic style, so please be sure that an outdoor casual portrait will be something they would want to display in their homes.

FOURTH ~ WHAT TO WEAR

Clothing decisions need to be made early so that those who are traveling can be prepared.  My best advice is this: choose neutrals plus 2-3 colors that match the decor of the grandparents, in case they want to hang an enlargement. So – jeans, blacks/grays, creams/khaki for your neutrals, and then 2 or 3 colors with very limited prints or patterns. The designated contact person should check with everyone ahead of schedule so that there aren’t any surprises, such as someone showing up in a football jersey that happens to match the red, gray and blue palette that was chosen (true story). Before your photo session, your family contact will receive my studio's What To Wear Guide.  This What To Wear Guide can be shared with your entire family and has more helpful tips and advice about choosing clothing and colors for your session.

FIFTH ~ LOCATION

Location is crucial to a good portrait because of the lighting. Often I am asked to shoot on location at a special place “in front of the garden” or at a lakefront or farm homestead. This creates special challenges, because I can’t have people squinting into the sun or crushed together to fit in front of a landmark. Time of day is especially important because of the position of the sun. We need to discuss specific locations prior to the session so that I can be adequately prepared with lighting equipment if needed. I have many places that are perfect for groups that I can recommend for a beautiful result. And remember, it’s about the PEOPLE, not the flowers!

Because these extended family photo sessions involve so much more work (posing and post-processing), and involve so many people, I only offer the two choices below in order to make it as simple as possible for all involved. Once the decision is made as to the type of session, the rest flows smoothly.

Please make sure that, if you plan on splitting the costs among family members, everyone knows exactly what their share will be BEFORE the session. Sometimes family members who have agreed to participate in the photo session may not be clear that their siblings also expect them to contribute financially, and to the degree required. Payment in full for the type of session is required on the day of the photo session, so if you are planning to share responsibility among siblings please collect the money early (this is for your protection – so you don’t get left holding the bag!).
